David L portraitDavid L., senior from Washington High School, has been named Washington County Regional Center’s “Outstanding Student of the Year.”

David was selected by Kirkwood staff based on exceptional academic performance, completion of at least half of his
coursework toward a degree, and his qualities of character and leadership. On April 19, 2024 David L. and his parents will be attending the Outstanding Student Reception
hosted by Kirkwood Academic Affairs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

“The thought of me being nominated as an Outstanding Student remains unbelievable to me, this is a great honor and is a form of recognition,” says D.J. He continues, “This
opportunity acts as the visual result of my actions, allowing me to realize that the hard work did not go unnoticed and was worth it in the end.” David notes that he would not be
where he is today if it were not for his faith, family, friends, colleagues, teachers, professors and others who helped guide him throughout his life.

David started taking College Credit in High School (CCHS) courses as a sophomore in high school. He will be graduating high school with 52 free college credits, an amazing accomplishment with a tuition savings of $10,920. He credits CCHS courses for helping him narrow his career interests from five options down to one: Computer Science. David will attend Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids to finish his AA degree and a second degree with a focus on Computer Science. After earning degrees at Kirkwood, he plans to transfer to University of Northern Iowa to earn a Bachelors in Computer Science and/or Business.

David, also known as “DJ” by his friends, is the son of David and Tara L. of Washington.

Fun fact: Both of his parents attended Kirkwood Community College, too! He has two sisters, as well as two dogs and three cats. David is a man with many interests including traveling, photography, meteorology/storm chasing, anything technology, video games, and keeping things organized.
