Dear Students and Families,
As you may have heard, Governor Reynolds announced that schools in Iowa should remain closed through April 30th in response to the COVID-19 crisis. While we are disappointed knowing that it will be several more weeks before we see our students, the safety of our community and state comes first.
Our administrative team will be applying for the online learning waiver from the Iowa Department of Education. After looking through the application the administration will make a recommendation to the school board to move forward with required learning, voluntary learning or a mixture of both. We want to ensure that we have the ability to provide high-level teaching and learning experiences in a virtual environment and that all students have equitable access to devices and the internet. It is our hope to announce a specific plan by April 10.
The application for online learning from the State will not be released until Monday, April 6th. We are required to apply by April 10th. If we are able to meet the requirements from the State for online learning our goal will be to move forward with required learning for 9-12 and voluntary learning PK-8th. If we have 8th graders who are enrolled in HS level classes they would be required to complete those classes. No matter which way we go, education will look differently for all of our students starting April 13th. If we are not able to receive the waiver all buildings will provide voluntary learning opportunities beyond what we are already doing.
We know that you have many questions. Rest assured that as soon as we have more specific information about how we will move forward with learning, we will share it with you. We are committed to ensuring that every student in the Washington Community School District receives the education that s/he deserves.

Como habrá escuchado, el gobernador Reynolds anunció que las escuelas en Iowa deberían permanecer cerradas hasta el 30 de abril en respuesta a la crisis de COVID-19. Si bien estamos decepcionados al saber que pasarán varias semanas más antes de que veamos a nuestros estudiantes, la seguridad de nuestra comunidad y estado es lo primero.
Nuestro equipo administrativo solicitará la exención de aprendizaje en línea del Departamento de Educación de Iowa. Después de revisar la solicitud, la administración recomendará a la junta escolar que avance con el aprendizaje requerido, el aprendizaje voluntario o una combinación de ambos. Queremos asegurarnos de que tenemos la capacidad de proporcionar experiencias de enseñanza y aprendizaje de alto nivel en un entorno virtual y que todos los estudiantes tengan acceso equitativo a dispositivos e Internet. Esperamos anunciar un plan específico antes del 10 de abril.
