Washington Community Schools

Over the past several days, we have had several questions come to the office ranging from what will we be doing academically for our students, how will we feed student, to how will the district honor activity passes now that some sports seasons have been canceled. All the questions are great, and will all get answered in time.

We had two significant worries that we were concerned with when this all started.  

1. How are we going to feed our students of need throughout this time off?  
   

   1. We started by just having three drop-off sites for the first two days. Each site would give two days' worth of lunches out to all kids age 1-18 that showed up.

   2. We are now transitioning to 11 sites with drop-off services for those people who are not in the town. We will deliver on Mondays (2 meals) and Wednesdays (3 meals) for the remainder of our closure. We will continue to send out a survey to collect meal data for us to be able to plan for the next delivery. The following survey will be sent out on Monday and will close Tuesday evening.

2. How are we going to take care of our staff during this time?

3. 1. The board met as a special meeting last night and approved a resolution to continue to pay for our staff members during this recommended closure. Thank you to our school board for putting the needs of our staff family first.

Now that those two items are somewhat taken care of, we will move on to the next major hurdle, and that is how to help our students academically. On Tuesday, our legislators approved that the student school days missed over closure will not be required to makeup. Washington students will not make up the days to follow the guidance of the State.  

Discussion Points:

1. Kirkwood is still open, so students who take classes out at the Kirkwood Center are still required to take the course online. If you have problems with internet access, please call the Kirkwood Center.

2. We are working on a plan on how to close down the 3rd term for our HS and MS students. We have time to devise the best opportunities for our students to succeed. 

3. By Department of Education guidance, the school district is not allowed to require students to work academically because of equity issues. With that being said, on Monday, the district will put out learning opportunities for our students. This will have links for PK-12th grade students. Some of it will be high tech learning, and some will be low tech learning opportunities to try and meet the needs of our students.

I want to thank our staff and our community members who continue to work hard to ensure the district is running the best it can. I have received calls from community members who are asking how they can help our students during this time of crisis. I can tell we live in Iowa because of neighbors and strangers reaching out to help one another. We need to continue to lean on each other and help our community survive this storm. It will take some time to get back to normal for our students and us, but we will get there together.

Teníamos dos preocupaciones importantes que nos preocupaban cuando todo comenzó.

1. ¿Cómo vamos a alimentar a nuestros estudiantes con necesidades durante este tiempo libre?

   1. Comenzamos simplemente teniendo tres sitios de entrega durante los primeros dos días. Cada sitio ofrecería dos días de almuerzos a todos los niños de 1 a 18 años que se presentaron.

   2. Ahora estamos haciendo la transición a 11 sitios con servicios de entrega para aquellas personas que no están en la ciudad.    1. La junta se reunió anoche como una reunión especial y aprobó una resolución para continuar pagando por los miembros de nuestro personal durante este cierre recomendado. Gracias a nuestra junta escolar por poner las necesidades de nuestra familia de personal primero.

Ahora que esos dos elementos están algo solucionados, pasaremos al siguiente obstáculo importante, y así es cómo ayudar a nuestros estudiantes académicamente. El martes, nuestros legisladores aprobaron que los días escolares perdidos por el cierre no serán necesarios para compensar. Los estudiantes de Washington no recuperarán los días para seguir la guía del Estado.

Puntos de discusión:

1. Kirkwood todavía está abierto, por lo que los estudiantes que toman clases en el Centro de Kirkwood aún deben tomar el curso en línea. Si tiene problemas con el acceso a Internet, llame al Centro Kirkwood.

2. Estamos trabajando en un plan sobre cómo cerrar el tercer trimestre para nuestros estudiantes de HS y MS. Tenemos tiempo para idear las mejores oportunidades para que nuestros estudiantes tengan éxito.

3. Por orientación del Departamento de Educación, el distrito escolar no puede exigir a los estudiantes que trabajen académicamente debido a problemas de equidad.
