Professional Development Visits PDF Print E-mail

Earlier this month, many of our staff members visited local industry and businesses as part of Professional Development Training. Visits were made to four locations here in Washington: Modine, Washington County Hospital, Whitesell and Engineered Building Design. The first half of the training consisted of a tour of the facility. The second half of the session was a discussion: Questions/ Answers, Discussion of skills needed, Labor market needs and What employers are seeing in new workers (what is necessary and what needs improvement).

A few things that were learned include: hot jobs right now are physical/ occupational therapy, one of the most important skills necessary in the workforce is "communication" (both verbal and written), the metric system is an important concept to learn, a good employee understands that he/she is "accountable" for doing their job; and most importantly, having a good work ethic makes a good employee.

WHS Students Travel to Costa Rica PDF Print E-mail

Seven Washington High School students traveled to Costa Rica this August with WHS Spanish teacher, Regina Schantz. In Costa Rica they saw rain forests, volcanoes, and wildlife, learned about the production of coffee, chocolate, and pineapples, toured the capital city of San José, and more. They also provided two days of community service: painting murals on a wall surrounding a middle school (shown), donating school supplies to the students, and restoring a park. Mrs. Schantz is planning another trip for next summer. Students who will have completed Spanish 3 should sign up by October 5.
