Members of the City of Washington Fire Department visited our school district during Fire Prevention Week. At both Stewart Elementary and Lincoln Elementary, they set up stations to teach students fire safety tips. Stations included: Fire Safety in the Kitchen (students were shown what do do in case of a fire); Fire Truck Exhibit (students got to see hands on a real fire truck); Smoke House (students learned to stay low and crawl out to safety); "Cherry Picker" Fire truck and how it works; Operation "Edith" (Exit Drill In The Home) -how every home should have an evacuation plan in place and everyone should know what to do in case of a fire. Students were also shown how to operate a fire extinguisher. Did you know that the minimum cost of a entire fire fighter uniform is $5000 (ie. helmet, boots, hoods, uniform, etc)? Also a large fire truck costs close to a half million dollars? We are lucky to have a great local fire department as well as many generous businesses in the area that help to cover the many costs involved with fire safety. Thank you!
