March 28 the 4-H STEM Club hosted their Project Showcase for community members and family members to see what the 26 members had learned and built during their March session “Catch the Wind”. Youth were excited to feature their sail boat and windmill projects.

This month they worked as mechanical engineers to ask, plan, design, build, test, and improve both sails and windmill blade systems. After testing several materials on their ability to catch the wind and then how fast their objects could move, they learned the different in design between a sail and a blade. Both doing important work to catch the wind but through different designs.

Washington County Extension & 4-H and Lincoln Elementary are partnering together with a sponsorship from Bazooka Farmstar to offer this 4-H STEM Club to any 3rd-5th grade students who wants to experiment more with science, technology, engineering, and math. The next session starts April 11 with a month devoted to coding and robots. March and April sessions are being led by volunteers Liz Goodwin, Julie Timmins and Extension 4-H Staff Amy Green.

The April STEM Club is full but similar STEM day camp opportunities will be available in April through Washington County Extension’s summer day camp program Clover University. Groups were challenged to design and build windmill blades that would catch the wind, move the blades and then lift weight. This group made of Ben K, Taylor M, Aiden R, and Quintyn G made the strongest windmill which lifted 38 washers by the night’s end.
