The 4-H STEM Club continued their March session “Catch the Wind” March 14 afterschool taking over the Lincoln gymnasium. This month they are learning and working as mechanical engineers to sails and windmill blades to catch the wind.

26 participants had a great time finishing the design and building of their sail boat sails. Groups tested their ability to catch the wind and measured/timed the results. They used that material knowledge to then start the design of their windmill blades. The goal is the blades will turn causing the windmill to lift weight.

Washington County Extension & 4-H and Lincoln Elementary are partnering together with a sponsorship from Bazooka Farmstar to offer this 4-H STEM Club to any 3rd-5th grade student who wants to experiment more with science, technology, engineering, and math.

There is no STEM Club the week of March 20 due to WCSD spring break. A community showcase is planned for March 28 at 4:30 p.m. to showcase what the students have learned and built as mechanical engineers. Any community member is welcome to come learn more from these students and see their recycled racers in action.

Similar STEM opportunities will be available this summer through Washington County Extension’s Clover University summer day camps. Registration information available in April. contact the Washington County Extension Office, 319-653-4811 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Cole V and Drew C designed their sail using a plastic bag with a special support system. Groups were allowed to test their sails and go back to the design board and supply table to make improvements until they met their goal. STEM instructor Julie Timmins timed their results.
