Twenty-six third-fifth graders participated in the February “Put a Lid on It” Afterschool STEM Club and presented to guests their creations March 1 at the Community Showcase. This group met for three Tuesdays afterschool at Lincoln Library working as biomedical engineers to design helmets.

They learned the important terms of criteria and constraints and how those impact what engineers do. Students watched a video showing the evolution of helmets and the many technologies that have improved them over the years and then were challenged with a certain budget and material choices to design a helmet that included the three critical parts. Small groups then designed, weighed, measured, redesigned, and tested on a mannequin.

This Afterschool 4-H STEM Club is sponsored by Bazooka Farmstar with support from Lincoln Elementary and lead volunteers Melanie Rothe and Janet Conrad. Contact the Extension Office if interested in assisting with future STEM clubs and activities.

The March/April STEM Club is full with the first meeting set for March 7 at Lincoln Library.
