The Washington Middle School (WMS) Adv Band is proud to announce they earned a I+ rating at the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) JH/MS Large Group Festival! The SEIBA Festival was held on March 27th at Solon Middle School. The band performed: Alamo March by Karl King, arr. by Swearingen, Joy by Frank Ticheli and Pinnacle by Rob Grice. At the conclusion of the performance, Bill Pringle (SEJH Iowa City Band director) worked with the band for a 15 minute mini-clinic. As well as the 1+ rating; they also received written & verbal comments from the three judges. The band received scores of 33 (I+), 33 (I+) & 32 (I). The WMS Adv Band is directed by Mr. Craig McClenahan & is comprised of 65 members (32-8th graders, 31-7th graders & 2-6th graders). The SEIBA Large Group Festival is open to all middle school/ jr. high bands in the SE District. Bands receive ratings based on their performance from three judges who score 0-5 points for each of the following 7 categories: TONE (Beauty, Blend, Control); INTONATION (Melodic Line, Chords, Tutti); TECHNIQUE (Articulation, Facility, Precision, Rhythm); BALANCE (Ensemble, Sectional); INTERPRETATION (Expression, Phrasing, Style, Tempo); MUSICAL EFFECT (Artistry, Fluency); & OTHER FACTORS (Appearance, Discipline, Instrumentation, Selections). I+ =33-35, I =30-32, I- =27-29, II+=24-26, II =20-23, II- =17-19, III =16 pts & below. The set up for the festival for each band is: 1.) Each band is allowed a maximum performance time of 15 minutes. 2.) One of the selections must be a march. 3.) The remainder of the 30 minutes will be used as an on stage clinic.
