The WMS Advanced Band earned a I+ rating at the SE Iowa Bandmasters Association (SEIBA) JH/MS Large Group Festival held at Solon Middle School on March 28th. The band performed 3 pieces: Rough Riders March by Karl King arr. by Swearingen, Cumberland Cross by Carl Strohman and Steel Driving Man (the Legend of John Henry) arr. David Meyers. At the conclusion of their performance, Megan Austin (West Liberty MS Band director) worked with the band in a 15 minute mini-clinic. The band also received written and verbal comments from all three judges during their performance . The Judges were Myron McReynolds (Iowa City High HS band), Dave Newport (retired Grinnell MS band director) & Megan Austin (West Liberty MS band director). The Band received scores of 33 (I+), 33 (I+) and 32 (I). The MS Advanced Band has 65 members (30-8th graders, 31-7th graders, and 4-6th graders) is directed by Craig McClenahan.
The SEIBA Large Group Festival is open to all middle school & jr. high bands in the SE District. Bands receive ratings based on their performance from three judges who score 0-5 points for each of the following 7 categories: TONE (Beauty, Blend, Control), INTONATION (Melodic Line, Chords, Tutti), TECHNIQUE (Articulation, Facility, Precision, Rhythm), BALANCE (Ensemble, Sectional), INTERPRETATION (Expression, Phrasing, Style, Tempo), MUSICAL EFFECT (Artistry, Fluency), OTHER FACTORS (Appearance, Discipline, Instrumentation, Selections). I+ = 33-35, I = 30-32, I- = 27-29, II+= 24-26, II = 20-23, II- = 17-19, III = 16 points & below.
The set up for the festival for each band is as follows: 1.) Each band will be allowed a maximum performance time of 15 minutes. 2.) One of the selections must be a march. 3.) The remainder of your 30 minutes will be used as an on stage clinic. It was a great experience for everyone!
