The City of Washington will celebrate its 175th year in 2014. The School District has been a big part of Washington’s history from the beginning. The community celebration will take place June 1st through June 8th of 2014. The weeklong celebration will have a different theme for each day. The themes include; On the Move, History, Business & Industry, Arts & Craft, Health & Fitness, Agriculture, Young at Heart and Living the Dream. Volunteers are needed. The general chairs are Diane Gallagher and Millie Youngquist. More information is available at the Chamber of Commerce website/ (319) 653-3272.

The WCSD is already involved in the celebration. One of the days will include an Alumni Concert Band and an Alumni Jazz Band. The School District has offered its facilities for rehearsals. The School District will also host an Alumni Reception following the concerts in Central Park. The District has also offered its facilities as an alternative location in case of rain. In addition the High School and Middle School bands have already been invited to be a part of the 175th Parade. Plans are being formulated to find uniforms from 1970 for the WHS baseball game on Friday of the celebration. Nineteen-seventy was the beginning of the WHS baseball program. An alumni football game with Mount Pleasant is also planned for Saturday of he celebration. Erin Rugg is the person organizing the events.

It is fitting that the WCSD is so important in this celebration of Washington’s past because it is educating the citizens who are Washington’s future. We are both proud and excited to be an integral part of the celebration! Mark your calendar and plan to be part of the festivities!
