Stewart: Immigration Day PDF Print E-mail

On March 7, the entire 2nd grade class immigrated to America! They packed their trunks, said their good-byes and boarded The USS Stewart. Most passengers rode in steerage. Their journey was a long, hot and uncomfortable trip; but they all arrived to America safely. They came through Ellis Island and had several rooms to pass through before their journey was complete. Students had to visit the Baggage Room, Information Room, Interview Room, Passport Room and Medical Room. They were responsible for answering many questions from the Immigration Officers. Some students were deported and sent back to their country for various reasons. This activity ended our Immigration Unit at Stewart Elementary. Students left school that day having a better understanding of what it was like to be an immigrant; and a true appreciation of our ancestors that arrived here. What an experience!
