The Washington County Riverboat Foundation awarded the Washington Community School District a $78,000 grant for an Indoor Hitting Facility during the spring of 2009.

This facility allows the High School Baseball and Softball teams a place to work out in the winter months and during weather that prohibits them from practicing outdoors during the season.  The facility has 3 batting cages with 2 pitching machines and an open area for hitting stations.  The facility also includes indoor restrooms, which will be used during games and practices.

The Washington Area Softball & Baseball youth teams will also utilize the Indoor Hitting Facility.  Having a facility where the younger kids can work on their skills year round only improves their confidence and the high school programs in the future. This facility was made possible with a $78,835 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation.

Stewart Elementary School is having its annual book fair on Thursday, October 22, and Tuesday, October 27.  Everyone is invited to come, browse, and purchase books.  The book fair will be open from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. each day.  The book fair will be in the school’s media center.  Profits from the book fair will be used to purchase new hardcover books for the school’s media center.

On Thursday, September 17, Lincoln Elementary School will be hosting a Science Family Night from 6:00-7:15 PM. Families will have the opportunity to learn about aeronautics and build, experiment, and fly different types of paper airplanes.  We will have five different stations to help teach families about flight.

6th grade students also have the opportunity to sign up and participate in the Iowa Youth Aviation Camp on Saturday, October 3 from 8 AM-12:30 PM at the Washington Municipal Airport.  The camp is sponsored by the Young Eagles.  The camp is free and will culminate with an airplane ride and pizza.  The Iowa Youth Aviation Camp is available to only 40 students.  If more than 40 students sign-up, 40 names will be drawn for the camp.
